How to Style Overalls

Summer season is upon us and you know what that means... time to break out the shorts! But when you're thinking of what to wear next, think no further than a pair of easy short-alls which happen to be making a comeback. Whether you call them short-alls, overalls, or dungarees, they're the perfect playful look! However sometimes they can be tricky to create that "perfect" look for them. That is where I come in. I have put together different ways to style them, complete with different shoes, shirts, and accessories that you can have fun mixing and matching on your own!

1. The first shirt idea that you could pair with overalls is a flowy striped tee, these always seem to look so good with any type you may be wearing.

Details: I got this shirt for really cheap from Old Navy. (Style Tip: Never over-spend on basic t-shirts, there's no need to when you can get one for very cheap and it will look the same, not to mention if you eventually wear it out, no need to worry because you didn't spend much on it and won't have to break the bank replacing it either! Save your money for something else very unique and special that is harder to find).

2. Or you can go for a crop top, again this one is striped and short sleeved, but these are nice to wear with overalls since you won't have a lot of extra fabric to tuck in.

3. A band t-shirt (or plain cotton tee) I love band tees with overalls because they are cute while also showing some personality. A basic cotton shirt also works, and is a nice and casual look.

Details: Pretty self-explanatory, both band tees, one from The 1975 and the other from Lovelife. (Style Tip: roll up the sleeves of you t-shirt if they are too long on you or just because it is cute!)

4. If it is a little chilly outside and you feel like covering up more, try wearing a light-weight knit sweater; the long sleeves also are a sweet looking combo with overall shorts.

Details: The striped sweater on the left is from forever 21 and has quarter sleeves, while the sweater on the right (says "Genius" has full-length sleeves and is from Target.

5. This next option is again if it is colder outside or you need to cover up more, etc. Throw on a flannel and then if it gets hot out you can tie it around your waist. The other option is a long cardigan (I suggest wearing one that is about a long as your overalls, however if there's a shorter one you think looks like a good match of course go for it because you know what works for you and it's all about personal style!)

Ok, now that we've seen different tops that look good with overalls, let's look at how they could be styled together with accessories and shoes!

1. For this first look, I decided to go with a light-weight, printed tee which is another great way to style your overalls. Then I paired that with a chunky gold chain necklace and Vans shoes. I personally really like the way tennis shoes, like Vans, look with overalls.

2. The second look I created was with a band tee and Converse high tops. Then I added spiky bracelets and a skull bangle. Then to top it off I threw in a pair of funky cat socks. If you are going with the band or plain tee, you need to add a little more to create the whole look while still not over-doing it. That's why I really like adding crazy socks because you can get away with it here since you aren't wearing a shirt or pants that will clash; the socks can be the attention grabber even!

3. The third look includes the striped crop top, pictured above, as well as chunky gold earrings, white/rose gold watch, and platform spiked shoes. Since the shirt is only black and white colored I decided to add brightly colored shoes and socks to pop. The jewelry is a nice touch to add so that, once again, it is not so plain.

Details: Shirt, Necklace, Watch, and Socks all from Forever 21, Shoes from Topshop

4. The fourth, and final look, includes the striped sweater, also pictured above, as well as a chunky pastel pink necklace with a gold chain, sparkly jelly shoes, and ruffled socks. I tried to make this outfit playful and girly by adding the sparkles and pastels. Sandals look good with this outfit, which is why I chose the jellies and if you can wear socks with your shoes, I would opt for ruffly ones like these because they're pretty and again adds to the overall "pretty and playful" look.

These 4 outfits are just some of many ways to style the different types of tops, however there are many different things that would look good with the different outfits. For example, most styles of shoes would look good with any other tops, these are just some ideas to get you thinking and inspired!

But oh wait! What if you can't find that perfect pair of overalls? I had this problem for a long time until I spotted this pair of Gap brand overalls on a vintage fashion truck while thrifting! So that is what I would suggest you start with doing if you are looking for a vintage looking pair as such. If you still aren't having any luck I would try searching sites such as Etsy and Ebay under 'Vintage' categories. If all else fails or you are just looking for something newer a great site to look at outfits others have created or create your own and search certain articles and types of clothing is Polyvore. Polyvore lets you see everything from shoes to dresses to accessories (and even makeup and music!!) and the stores they come from. It's a great way to find exactly what you want while getting inspired from others all over the world and maybe discover some new brands and stores along the way.

Hope this helped and make sure to comment below how you would style a pair of overalls! As always, thanks for reading.
